Workshop Five: Learn What the Customer Really Wants and Needs


Once you have gained rapport in your first meeting, your next challenge is to understand what the customer needs and wants. Often, the customer either does not want to tell you his/her real needs OR the customer may not even be fully aware of what is needed. Careful use of well-engineered questions can help a customer see and talk about real needs and real concerns. They can "clear the smoke" and enable real conversation. With rapport and skill, you can understand the customer and be a real resource and partner. Consultative selling is impossible until you can get past the “buyer/seller dance” and have a real conversation. This requires you to know how to listen and how to avoid “question traps” and “mind-reading”.
